Springfield cashier pushed during Speedway robbery

A Springfield cashier was pushed out of the way by a suspect who stole cigarettes, a Springfield police report says.

Police began their investigation Monday at around 2 a.m. when they were called to the Speedway on East Main Street. There, they spoke with an employee at the store that said a suspect robbed it, according to the report.

“(The cashier) stated that the unknown suspect was behind the counter looking for cigarettes,” the report says. “(The cashier) stated that he told the suspect to go back out to the front of the register and he would get what the suspect wanted.”

The suspect asked for three cartons of cigarettes, the report says, and the cashier retrieved them and placed them on the counter.

“(The cashier) thought he recognized the suspect and went to move the cigarettes out of reach of the suspect,” the report says. “In doing so, the suspect pushed (the cashier) and took the cigarettes then exited the store.

Police continue their investigation, according to the report.
