Shooting victim now faces assault charges

URBANA — Several months after Timothy Havens was sentenced to serve jail time for shooting his wife with a handgun, both the woman and Havens are now facing new charges in Champaign County from two separate incidents.

Addie King, an assistant Champaign County Prosecutor, said Carolyn Havens, 43, whose address is not available, is accused of breaking into her husband’s home in the 4900 block of East County Line Road in Springfield in February. Along with three men, she is accused of breaking into the home where her husband was living with another woman. While there, she was accused of injuring a woman in the home, pulling her hair and kicking her. She was also accused of taking the victim’s purse.

Carolyn Havens is facing charges of aggravated burglary, burglary, criminal damaging, assault, and theft, according to court records.

King said Carolyn Havens is expected to face a pre-trial hearing Friday, June 18.

The three other men are also facing charges for their alleged involvement in the incident. They include Cody Havens, 21, of 369 Reams Road, Springfield, Michael Zugelder, 18, of 2744 Upper Valley Pike, Springfield, and Wesley P. Vaughn, 21, also of 2744 Upper Valley Pike. All three men are facing charges of aggravated burglary, burglary, criminal damaging and theft, according to court records.

Vaughn is expected to face a pre-trial hearing Friday. Cody Havens is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial Monday, June 21, while Zugelder is scheduled to face a hearing Monday, June 28.

In a separate case, Timothy Havens is also facing a hearing in Clark County Common Pleas Court today, June 17, for a probation violation.

Champaign County Prosecutor Nick Selvaggio said Timothy Havens is facing a domestic violence charge from an incident on June 9 in which he is accused of assaulting a woman he knew in his home. If found guilty, Timothy Havens could be returned to probation or sent to prison, Selvaggio said.

Last spring, Havens was sentenced to serve 90 days in jail in a case in which he was accused of shooting his wife with a handgun. He had called 911 to report that he shot his wife “during sex.” The victim told investigators the shooting had been an accident, but investigators argued some of the evidence did not seem to match that story.
