Officers responded around 1 a.m. to Speedway, 1241 W. North St., on reports of a robbery.
“The suspect entered the store with a note demanding money,” the affidavit says. “He reached towards his waistband suggesting he had a weapon.”
Lubbers arrived at the gas station in a taxi, according to the affidavit.

After officers arrived, they contacted the taxi company who told them the driver still had Lubbers with him.
“The driver didn’t realize the suspect had robbed the business,” the affidavit says.
The driver told officers he picked up Lubbers at his home in Riverside to take him to Springfield.
“During their trip to Springfield, Lubbers would tell him he needed to stop at a Speedway to get cash because he needed money to pay for his fair,” the affidavit says. “He said he stopped at least four times at different Speedways but Lubbers was having trouble getting money.”
The two stopped at the Speedway on West North Street briefly, then went to a local bank, according to the affidavit.

“Lubbers insisted that he return to the West North Street Speedway,” the affidavit says. “Lubbers went into the store, was inside for a short time, then came back to the van.”
Lubbers then asked the driver to take him to his original Springfield destination and paid him $70, the affidavit says. When they got to that destination, Lubbers got out of the van but returned a short time later to be taken back home, where he gave the driver another $70.
After officers were able to identify Lubbers, they went to his home in Riverside to arrest him.
Lubbers was cooperative with officers and said “that he did rob the store because he needed money to pay a drug debt” and “used the rest of the money to pay for the taxi.”
Lubbers, appeared in Clark County Municipal Court Wednesday on charges of aggravated robbery. His bond was set at $25,000. He is being held in the Clark County Jail.
