Springfield police are investigating a reported assault where shots were fired that took place this week.

Officers responded around 8 a.m. Monday to the 2000 block of Clifton Avenue in reference to an assault, according to a police report.

When crews arrived, the victim told them he was with a friend who was driving a blue SUV when he fell asleep at the wheel and struck multiple parked vehicles on the east side of the street.

“One of the vehicles was occupied by two males and a female,” the report says. “The male that was in the driver seat of one of the involved vehicles fired three shots at the blue SUV.”

The victim described the man to police and said he had a short, black beard and was wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue sweatpants.

According to the report, the man chased the victim and driver of the blue SUV after they took off running to a friend’s house on Clifton Avenue.

“At the rear of the residence, (the victim) stated that the suspect punched him in the face,” the report says. “He said he came through the back door and fell on the kitchen floor as the suspect fired one round at him before he got up from the floor and proceeded to run into the front room.”

Police found a shell casing of a .380 caliber gun that was on the floor in front of the kitchen table.

No suspect information was available and no arrests have been made as Springfield police continue their investigation into this incident.
