A man has been accused of trying to burn down a Springfield business.

A Springfield man was arrested last month on an arson charge after he was accused of trying to burn down a building on East Main Street.

Edwin Emrich, 44, was arrested by Springfield police Nov. 23 morning after they alleged he lit a fire under the awning of Quality Smokes, 2160 E. Main Street. He pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $1,000. He’s next scheduled to appear in Clark County Municipal Court on Jan. 11 for pre-trial.

An officer at the scene saw residents trying to put out a fire in a trash can.

“One of the individuals was dragging a trash can from in front of the fire attempting to put it out with the assistance of a female assisting him with a water bottle spraying water on the fire,” the report says.

Police say they received cell phone video allegedly showing Emrich starting the fire.

“An officer collected the suspect’s lighter and photographed the scene,” the report says.
