Police began their investigation on Dec. 14 when they were called to Veterinary Services at the 1400 block of Mitchell Boulevard for a break-in. Through viewing security footage of multiple break-ins, police were able to connect the crimes, a police affidavit says.

At Veterinary Services, police were able to view security footage of a man breaking in to steal money, according to the affidavit.
“(The suspect) approaches the business and throws a rock multiple times at the glass door causing it to break,” the affidavit says. “He then kicks it several times as well to make a hole in the glass before reaching his left arm in and unlocked the door. The defendant then enters the business, goes to the receptionist desk and starts checking drawers.”
The suspect finds money, the affidavit says, and then exits the building.
Police also responded to Northwood Veterinary Hospital on the 3000 block of Middle Urbana Road for a breaking and entering call on the same day. Police said money was taken from the business and security footage showed a man wearing similar clothes to the person who broke into Veterinary Services.

The next night police responded to a break-in at the Tunnel Drive Thru. Security footage caught a blue Saturn, possibly a stolen car, driving into a garage door.
“The defendant then gets out of the driver seat and enters the business,” according to the affidavit. “Once inside the defendant uses what appears to be some type of pry tool to break out the window in the door leading to the office area and gains entry. He then attempts to remove a safe inside the office that is bolted down but was unable to get it.”
Also that night, police responded to the Beverage Depot on the 700 block of South Burnett Road where they found a break-in. A witness said she saw a blue Saturn fleeing from the area. Security footage showed the Saturn ran into the building.

“In the video, the defendant is seen driving a blue Saturn through the East Garage entry door. He then exits the driver seat and enters the office area wearing the exact same clothing in the Tunnel Drive Thru video,” the affidavit says.
With the video footage, police were able to get pictures of the suspect and told officers to be on the lookout for the suspect. Officers were able to identify Ewers as the suspect, the affidavit says.
Police arrested Ewers while he was walking on Highland Avenue, according to the affidavit.
