Springfield police investigated numerous crimes last week, here are three that were covered in the Springfield News-Sun.

1) An aggravated arson

A Springfield man is accused of setting fire to his home and blocking firefighters who were trying to fight the flames.

Mark Bass Jr., 27, is charged with two counts of aggravated arson and a count of obstructing justice in Clark County Municipal Court. He appeared in court on Tuesday but the case was continued until Wednesday.

Springfield police began their investigation when they were called to a home on the 1400 block of Sunset Avenue, according to a court affidavit.

“While en route to the call, dispatch advised the male had went inside of the residence and had set the house on fire,” the affidavit says. “When I arrived on scene I noticed the front room of the residence was engulfed in flames. Heavy black smoke was rolling from all of the windows and doors.”

Officers said they found Bass outside the home talking with a man and when he saw the police cursed at them and ran back into the home.

2)Sidewalk robbery

A Springfield man reported being robbed while walking near Municipal Stadium.

Springfield police responded to the 1100 block of Mitchell Boulevard where the victim said he was walking when a silver van pulled up beside him and made contact with him.

3) Possible upgraded charges in stabbing

Raymond Roberts, the 42-year-old Springfield man accused of slicing his wife’s throat, could be facing more serious charges than initially anticipated.

“The state intends to pursue charges of attempted murder and felonious assault for two separate acts during this incident,” said Clark County Assistant Prosecutor Megan Farley during Roberts’ arraignment in the Clark County Municipal Court Monday.

Roberts was originally sought on arrest warrants for domestic violence and felonious assault. He was booked into the Clark County Jail on Saturday, Sept. 22 on a charge of felonious assault — serious harm to the victim.
