Guns stolen from Springfield pawn shop

SPRINGFIELD — Twenty-four handguns were stolen when a local pawn shop was burglarized early Wednesday morning.

The burglary happened just before 3:30 a.m. at the Springfield Pawn & Loan II at 2731 E. Main St. Officers responded to an alarm and found the front glass door shattered and the metal gate held by a chain cut open. Inside, police said a display case was shattered.

The owner declined to comment but confirmed the case held 24 handguns. He said he registered the guns and plans to deliver the paperwork to police so they can track down the stolen weapons.

Customers said they were shocked to hear of the burglary.

“That’s all they stole out of there was guns? Wow,” said Walt Campbell. “Well, I guess we might have to start selling bulletproof vests here in Springfield.

“I mean, that’s shocking to have all those guns on the street right now,” Campbell added.

Madison Burkitt said she wasn’t too surprised since she works at a nearby gas station that’s been robbed twice. But she said she’s concerned that the burglars went for the gun instead of gold or jewelry.

“It’s scary to know all those guns are out here with who knows (who) behind (them) to pull the trigger,” she said.
