Family tragedy: Springfield woman killed in Sunday crash lost fiance to gun violence last year

The Springfield woman who was killed in a Sunday car crash was the fiance of a man shot and killed in the city in 2017.

Jessica Cydrus was engaged to Jeff Rife when he was killed last year, her family told the Springfield News-Sun. Rife was killed in March when he was shot on the 500 block of South Clairmont Avenue.

Cydrus was driving her Toyota Camry east on John Street around 4:15 p.m Sunday when an SUV that was speeding drove through a stop sign at Portage Path, smashing into the driver’s side of the vehicle, according to police.

The Camry came to a rest against a telephone pole, according to the report. Cydrus was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, according to the report.

A passenger in the Camry, Jamie Salters, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by EMS.

The driver of the SUV was identified as 18-year-old Micah Byrd, of Springfield. He was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center, according to the report.

An update for Salters and Byrd was not available Tuesday. No charges have been filed in the crash and it’s still under investigation.
