3rd Greenon student killed in crash: 3 things to know

Here’s three things to know about the crash and the other tragedies that have befallen the school.

1. DePhillip killed while a passenger

The crash in Clark County occurred a little before 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said DePhillip was killed when a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Andrew Scott, 16, and another student at Greenon High School, went off the side of the road and clipped a telephone pole, then spun into another pole.

DePhillip, a front-seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. Scott sustained non-life threatening injuries. Police say speed and unfamiliarity with the road might be factors in the crash. Drugs and alcohol aren’t believed to be involved, and both occupants were wearing seat belts.

Greenon High School teacher Cathy Turner remembered Kenny DePhillip as a fun-loving, practical jokester who was friends with everyone at the school.

"He was just an all-around amazing, good kid and a great loss to our community," Turner said at a vigil for him Monday night.

2. A dangerous stretch of road?

According to data from the Clark County-Springfield Transportation Coordinating Committee, the area near where the boys crashed is among the most dangerous in Clark County. A report says Rebert Pike close to Fowler Road was ranked 29th most dangerous in the county from 2014-2016. That study didn’t measure Fowler Road.

The ranking takes crash frequency and severity of crashes into account to determine how hazardous a road can be.

3. Third Greenon HS student killed in a car crash within two months

Two other Greenon High School students, senior David Waag, 17, and sophomore Connor Williams, 15, were also killed in a car crash while riding as passengers back in August.

Neither of the teens were wearing seat belts while traveling on Wilkerson Road between Fairborn and Yellow Springs when the driver of the vehicle they were in lost control and hit a tree, then flipped over. Speed was also believed to be a factor in that crash.
