NEW DETAILS: Dayton man dies after I-70 crash in Clark County

A 32-year-old Dayton man was killed in a crash that closed Interstate 70 westbound lanes for several hours near the U.S. Route 68 ramps in Springfield Twp. on Tuesday morning.

The man who died was identified as Charles E. Simmons. He was trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clark County Coroner’s office, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Initial reports from troopers said the crash was reported around 6:05 a.m. and involved a semi truck and two other vehicles on I-70 near mile post 52 in Springfield Twp., the patrol said.

Simmons was driving a 2017 Nissan Altima westbound on I-70 and it became disabled in the roadway from a previous crash, troopers said.

A 2020 Freightliner commercial motor vehicle driven by 38-year-old Roshaun Valentine from Libby, Mont., struck the Nissan, and both vehicles traveled off of the right side of the roadway and caught fire, the patrol said.

Springfield Twp. Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire and treated on-scene injuries, according to troopers.

Both the U.S. 68 north and south ramps from I-70 west were closed. Motorists were advised to drive with caution or avoid the area if possible as investigators and first responders worked.

Mad River Twp. Fire Department, Springfield Twp. Fire Department, Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Coroner’s Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation all assisted on scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
