The first baby of the New Year in Clark County arrived at Mercy Health - Springfield Regional Medical Center on New Year’s Day just after midnight.

Marco Van Dixon was born at 12:19 a.m. weighing 7 pounds, 2 ounces, and measuring at 19.5 inches long.

This is Ashley Longshaw and Brian Dixon’s third child. Marco is a baby brother to Brian M. Dixon, Jr., 6, and Laiylah N. Dixon, 1.

Although the couple didn’t plan to have Marco in the New Year, Ashley said she did want to have him before midnight.

“I just went into labor. We were actually trying to have him before midnight. I was in labor 22 hours, but it wasn’t terrible, honestly,” she said. “It wasn’t something that we planned. I was just ready to have him. I had been in labor so long.”

Not only was Ashley pregnant during the coronavirus pandemic, she also had COVID-19 about half way through her pregnancy as well.

“I actually had COVID-19 as well while I was pregnant, it was rough. I had COVID-19 the end of July, beginning of August,” Ashley said. “My smell and taste were gone, probably a total of 18 days, but my breathing and other side effects lasted about 10-14 days. I was actually able to stay out of the hospital. I was able to stay home.”

Ashley gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

“I didn’t have any side effects with my pregnancy, the baby was fine, but it (COVID-19) did cause for there to be extra ultrasounds just to monitor his weight and I had to have a little bit of more testing done,” Ashley said. “We weren’t sure how it would affect him because it was so new. They (the doctors) were worried about his weight possibly, but he is just fine.”

Ashley said they are excited to be new parents again, and feels her two other children will be excited as well.

“We’re excited. It’s nice,” she said. “Our daughter isn’t too old and I think she’s going to be excited about.”

Brian said this is his third New Year’s being at the hospital as there were babies born in his family this day the last three years. Ashley said this is the second for her as her brother had the first baby born at Miami Valley Hospital last year on New Year’s.

The family was still at the hospital as of Friday afternoon, but when they get to go home and continue to be parents in a pandemic, she said their goal is “just for him to stay healthy during the pandemic.”
