The City of Springfield has again suspended disconnectioning past due water and sewer utility accounts as coronavirus cases rise in the area.

City officials say disconnections on past due accounts will remain suspended until Sept. 7.

Residential water disconnections on past due accounts in the city were temporarily suspended starting in March. That decision was due to concerns that the coronavirus pandemic may compromise local families’ means to meet financial obligations.

However, the city planned on resuming disconnections for delinquent water and sewer utility accounts this week before deciding to further the suspension.

“Springfield is a resilient community that knows how to come together in a time of crisis,” said Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck. “As we’ve seen an increase in cases recently, we are taking prudent measures to help those in our community who may be facing financial difficulties due to the pandemic.”

In an effort to encourage social distancing, city officials are asking residents to submit their utility payments at drop-off locations on Fountain Avenue near City Hall or in front of the city’s service center at 2100 Lagonda Ave.

The first floor of City Hall, which holds the Utility Billing department, will remain open to the public during limited hours throughout the week, which are 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday as well as 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday.

All visitors are required to wear face coverings.
