The City of Springfield will allow in-person public participation at its commission meetings after suspending that practice earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We welcome and encourage public engagement in all we do in service to the community,” said Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck.

“Under close consultation with local health officials, we have taken a phased approach to resume in-person meetings and public participation," he added.

Springfield city commissioners have been meeting regularly every two weeks. However, those public meetings have been done virtually since March.

Residents who wished to participate during that time were asked to send questions ahead of time, which would be read to commissioners during a live stream, published online, of the meeting.

Members of the public could not attend those meetings in-person due to safety concerns centered around the coronavirus pandemic.

However, as commission meetings resume at City Hall, 76 E High St., so will in-person public participation. Those participating or in attendance are required to wear face coverings, submit to temperature checks and follow social distancing protocols.

Members of the public will be permitted to address city commission under normal rules at a three-minute time limit. The next city commission meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
