The numbers are “good news,” said Charles Patterson, health commissioner at CCCHD.
“We have an average of about 22 cases a day over this past week,” he said referring to the week of Feb. 8. “We started keeping track of the weekly numbers back in June of 2020 and our weekly numbers have not been this low prior to those dates in June,” Patterson said.
The health district began tracking weekly confirmed COVID-19 cases after a workplace COVID-19 outbreak at Dole Fresh Vegetables in Springfield. The outbreak lead to 250 confirmed cases the week of June 19, according to data from the CCCHD.
Since then, cases had yet to dip back down below the 200 mark.
“Twenty-two cases, if you remember back in the early days, we would have been horrified back then, even that many cases per week was a lot back in May. So we do need to continue to be vigilant, continue to seek out a vaccine when it’s your turn,” Patterson said.
While Patterson said the numbers are “super,” now is not a good time for residents to stop COVID-19 prevention habits.
“They could always go the other way and come back up,” Patterson said. “So we still do need to be wearing masks and social distancing at least for a couple more months until we can make this permanet.”
Clark County had 11,995 cases of the coronavirus as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the Ohio Department of Health. The county also had 293 deaths and 13 probable deaths.
As of Wednesday, 18,425 vaccination shots have been given in Clark County, according to ODH. That’s roughly 13.74% of the population.
