“That’s down for the week. That continues to be down. We are happy about that. That’s 47 cases a day on average,” Clark County Combined Health District Commissioner Charles Patterson said. “That’s still a lot of cases a day but we are coming down off of that high number of cases that we had throughout the months of November and December.”
Between Jan. 15 and Jan. 22, the county recorded 348 new confirmed cases of the virus, according to CCCHD data. Prior to that, the last time the county recorded weekly case numbers that low was the week of Nov. 6, when the county saw roughly 200 confirmed cases, according to data from the CCCHD.
The decreasing cases are a sign the county is “on the upswing,” Patterson said Friday during his weekly update on the status of the pandemic in the county. But he also warned that precautions like masking and social distancing are what caused those numbers to drop and easing up on them would mean starting back at square one.
“Our numbers are down but please don’t let your guard down. Don’t let your mask down. Don’t let your social distancing down. We need to continue to vaccinate a couple of thousand people a week here, and over the next couple of months, so we can get the schools back in session, so we can protect our most vulnerable population, and then we can work on getting back to normal,” Patterson said.
Clark County isn’t the only one recording dwindling COVID-19 case numbers. Ohio’s number of daily cases stayed under 4,000 for the second day in a row on Monday, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
Throughout the pandemic, Ohio has had a total of 899,079 cases.
The state recorded 3,287 cases Monday a slight increase from the 3,011 cases reported on Sunday. It’s the first two times that Ohio has had less than 4,000 daily cases in 2021.
Deaths increased by 55 on Monday, bringing the state’s total to 11,230, according to ODH.
Clark County had 11,462 total cases of the coronavirus as of Monday afternoon, according to ODH. The county also had 276 deaths and 13 probable deaths, according to data from the CCCHD.
As of Monday, 10,838 vaccination shots have been given out in Clark County, according to ODH. That’s about 8.08% of the county’s population.
