The Community Blood Center will host several blood drives in Clark and Champaign counties during the week of Thanksgiving to help prevent a holiday shortage.

Donors who register will get the “Be a Hometown Hero This Holiday” fleece blanket with the CBC blood drop logo, according to a release from the CBC.

The blood drives include:

  • Father Paul Vieson Center, 205 W. Lake Ave. in New Carlisle, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 22.
  • First Christian Church, 3638 Middle Urbana Road in Springfield, from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
  • Mary Rutan Hospital, 205 Palmer Ave. in Bellefontaine, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
  • Quest Community Church, 110 South St. in West Liberty, from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
  • Medway Church, 2550 S. Dayton-Lakeview Road in New Carlisle, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27.
  • South Charleston United Methodist Church, 15 E. Jamestown St., from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27.

Blood type O remains in low supply and CBC is counting on donors to prevent an emergency shortage. The CBC is closed Thanksgiving Day and there are very few mobiles scheduled during the holiday week, the CBC stated.

The blood center is preparing for both pandemic-related disruptions and seasonal challenges in the blood drive schedule. People have less time to donate during the holidays and are less able to donate during winter due to seasonal illness and winter weather travel conditions and cancellations.

The blood donation requirements include: to provide a photo ID that includes their full name; past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card; be at least 17 years of age or 16 years old with parental consent (the form is available at www.givingblood.org or at CBC brand and blood drive locations); weight a minimum of 110 pounds, but you may have to weigh more depending on your height; and be in good physical health.
