The Abilities Connection (TAC), a nonprofit that empowers people with disabilities to achieve their full potential in community settings, expanded in June through Fresh Abilities to create employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities within the food service industry.
Produce for the restaurant is grown and harvested in TAC’s hydroponic greenhouse on its campus on Old Selma Road in Springfield.
Fresh Abilities, inspired by Porttion, a Columbus-based start-up that deliverers healthy prepared meals nationally, serves specialty salads, build-your-own salads, soups and smoothies - while employing and training people with disabilities.
Items that have been added to the restaurant’s menu include a kid’s meal, wraps, bread bowls for soup, cookies and smaller size smoothies, a press release from TAC said.
Soups currently in the restaurant’s rotation for “Soup of the Day” include Broccoli Cheddar, Apple Pumpkin Bacon, Chicken & Noodles, Chicken and Dumplings, Garden Vegetable and Cactus Chili.
Fresh Abilities is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 101 S. Fountain Ave.
