“This investment positively impacts the educational experience of Clark State’s students by providing academic areas that better support student collaboration, inclusivity, learning and success,” said Doug Schantz, executive vice president of finance, facilities and operations. “We addressed critical needs to move the college forward, accommodating both current and future students.”
Originally constructed in 1968, the building was designed by architect John Kline and named in honor of James A. Rhodes, then Ohio governor. Today, the hall houses the majority of Clark State’s general education courses, transfer programs and the Student Academic Support Center.
College officials said the more than 71,000 square-foot renovation of Rhodes Hall began in 2014 with the creation of the Student Academic Support Center on the first floor. The next phase of the renovation in 2017 was primarily focused on updating the mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure of the building.
In 2019, another phase of the renovations modernized the classrooms, restrooms, hallways, flooring and faculty offices on the third floor. Then in 2021, more renovations were done to address similar needs on the second floor, school officials said.

The fourth and final phase of renovations that began in May 2023 and continued through that summer included updates to the four science labs, the exterior envelope of Rhodes Hall and the Wiley Plaza.
“Everything we do at Clark State is for students, and this renovation project has truly transformed our educational spaces, academic offerings and campus as a whole,” said President Jo Alice Blondin. “We offer students state-of-the art labs across our campus, as well as spaces where they can collaborate, recharge and interact in ways that truly bring life and joy to our college. We are very excited to share these spaces with our community during our open house.”
Those attending the Sept. 17 open house are asked to arrive by 3:45 p.m. for remarks from speakers including Mike Duffey, chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and Ohio Senator Bob Hackett. Building tours will begin at 4 p.m., and light refreshments will be served.
Clark State officials said now that the renovation project is completed, the college is “shifting its attention” to improvements at the Applied Science Center.
