Clark-Shawnee Local Schools has changed their plan for when students return to the classroom in the fall, the district superintendent said.

“After careful consideration, the Clark-Shawnee Board of Education and Administration has made the decision to commit to hybrid learning for students in the in-person learning model for the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year,” said Superintendent Brian Kuhn. “The hybrid model operates with reduced capacity allowing for more social distancing in classrooms, lunchroom, hallways, and on school buses.”

When the plan was initially shared, the district offered two options - in-school or remote learning - but intended to begin the year with in-person instruction at school with safety protocols, Kuhn said.

Kuhn said online learning students or in-person learning students with last names that begin with A-K should plan for their first day of school on Tuesday, Sept. 8. He said in-person learning students with last names that begin with L-Z will begin on Thursday, Sept. 10.

He added that if a family has students with last names in both groups to contact the school their child attends to get them on the same schedule.

Students with last names A-K will attend school on Mondays and Tuesdays and engage in distance learning Wednesday through Friday. Students with last names L-Z will attend on Thursdays and Fridays and engage in distance learning Monday through Wednesday.

“These distance learning assignments will be flexible so that students can work on assignments at times that work with their family’s schedule,” Kuhn said.

Kuhn said specific cleaning protocols would be implemented on Wednesday while students are not in school.

For those that chose the in-person learning model, masks will be required for K-12 students while at school in buildings and on buses after Gov. Mike DeWine announced an order requiring them earlier this month.

For those that chose the remote learning model, students in K-6 will receive instruction on the Google Classroom virtual learning platform and 7-12 will work on the Edmentum virtual learning platform.
