The Clark County Solid Waste District is introducing a new program to improve the recycling experience for residents.

“If groups become personally invested in those drop off sites and take a bit of ownership over them, I think that in the end it will create a better experience for the average resident going to recycle,” Sam Perin, an education specialist at the Clark County Solid Waste District said.

Operation Adopt-A-Drop, a new program inviting residents or groups to become stewards of the county’s recycling sites, is aimed at creating a pleasant recycling experience by having volunteers clean up those sites.

Perin explained that he thought of the idea for this program after him and another Clark County Solid Waste District employee cleaned up a recycling site during the holiday season. He said they were able to break down boxes to create additional space in the recycling bins.

“A lot of the issue with the reason why sites get built up so quickly and people end up sitting stuff on the ground is because boxes do not get broken down,” Perin said.

Residents or groups that decide to adopt a recycling site are expected to cleanup their adopted site at least once a month, Perin explained. He said volunteers do not have to commit to a certain time frame.

Residents will also receive training on what can and cannot be recycled to educate others.

Perin said volunteers will be recognized for their efforts on Facebook and by having a sign posted at their site.

“We’re excited to get some residents or groups within the county involved in the operation and process of recycling and help us make it a more pleasant experience and a little more efficient,” Perin said.

This is not the first cleanup program the district has sponsored.

Perin said they sponsor several public cleanup projects including The Great American Cleanup Program, Adopt-A-Spot and Adopt-A-Road.

“This is kind of an extension of those programs,” Perin said. “It will make for a better experience for our residents.”

Clark County recycling drop off stations are located at 1620 West Main St. in Springfield, 525 East Home Road in Springfield, 5467 Selma Pike in Green Twp., 1539 Student Ave. in Northridge, 7952 Dayton-Springfield Road in Mad River Twp., and at the corner of Old Columbus Road and State Route 54 in Pleasant Twp.
