The Clark County Park District has designed a new family activity to encourage children to exercise, while practicing their reading skills.

The StoryWalk Trail behind the Davidson Interpretive Center, located at 5638 Lower Valley Pike in Springfield, features a children’s book for families to read as they walk along the trail.

“It’s a way for them to walk along the trail and get some exercise and work on their reading,” Donna Lewis, Clark County Park District program/volunteer coordinator said.

She explained that she wanted to do this a while ago, but was worried about the costs of copyrights. She said she talked with the New Carlisle Library and found out that they were doing a similar activity.

The Clark County Park District borrowed the library’s story signs in Nov. and Dec. and decided to make their own signs this month.

“Some people do them in a permanent fashion, but we are doing it so we can pick it up and move it,” Lewis said.

She said she hopes to have a StoryWalk Trail at some of their other parks.

This new activity gives children something to do while they exercise that will help keep them engaged, Lewis said.

The trail behind the Davidson Interpretive Center is paved, an easy walk and wheelchair accessible.

Lewis said she encourages residents to visit the StoryWalk Trail to get outside and take a break from staying indoors.

“Sleep, Black Bear, Sleep” is the current book on the StoryWalk Trail. Lewis said they are planning to change the book in February.
