Two-term Clark County Commissioner Lowell McGlothin celebrated his retirement at his last commission meeting Friday, expressing his gratitude to the county government and community.

McGlothin, who has served eight years as commissioner, decided not to run for reelection this past November, and former Health Commissioner Charlie Patterson was elected to take his place. The outgoing commissioner said he intended to focus on his health while still being active in his hometown of New Carlisle.

Commission President Melanie Flax Wilt said she and McGlothin started on the board one day apart and have worked together ever since.

“He is trusting and trustworthy and always saw the best in people,” Flax Wilt said. “He has always been agreeable and forward-leaning, especially for Clark County. So let me take a tip from your book, Lowell, and say thank you.”

McGlothin was born and raised in Clark County, graduating from Tecumseh High School before going into the Marine Corps. He worked as a model around the 70s and 80s and studied at Long Beach City College. He has two adult sons and three grandsons.

The outgoing commissioner served on New Carlisle’s city council for 17 years and was the city’s mayor for four years. He worked in farmers insurance for 30 years, retiring after being elected commissioner.

Patterson will be sworn in to McGlothin’s seat on Jan. 2.

Commissioner Sasha Rittenhouse, who’s been on the board for about two-and-a-half years, thanked McGlothin for serving as New Carlisle’s mayor as well as in the Marines. She applauded his thankful nature, saying that McGlothin has always taken the time to recognize people for the work.

“You’ve been nothing but kind and welcoming and you’ve been so easy to work with,” Rittenhouse told McGlothin.

McGlothin thanked Rittenhouse and Flax Wilt for handling county meetings several times this year while he was out for medical issues and procedures.

“I thank all the staff ... it’s been a great time working with all of you,” McGlothin said. “You all have so much to give for this county. We appreciate it very much.”
