SROs approved for Northwestern Local School District

A third deputy for the 2018-2019 school year has been approved by the Clark County Commissioners and the Sheriff’s Office during a commission meeting last Thursday.

The school safety pilot program will bring a dedicated Clark County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer into the Northwestern Local School District, according to a release.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year with Tecumseh Local Schools and the Springfield-Clark County Career Technical Center to place an officer on its campuses throughout the day.

“We want every child in Clark County to feel safe when they go to school,” said Commissioner Rick Lohnes, who championed the program along with Clark County Sheriff Deb Burchett.

The total cost for the deputies is roughly $255,000, with the county paying about $105,000 and the three school districts paying about $50,000 each.

The program is expected to begin in August and will operate for one year with an option to reevaluate at its completion. The deputies will be placed back on the road during the summer based on the program needs.
