Two local high school seniors from two separate schools have been named National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists.

Over 1.5 million juniors took the PSAT last fall, resulting in 16,000 students being named semifinalists, which represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, according to the NMS Corp.

The two local semifinalists are Christian Narcelles at Springfield High School and Caleb W. Schetter at Emmanuel Christian Academy.

Over 90%, about 15,000, of semifinalists are expected to be named finalists and over half of those finalists will win a scholarship, according to an announcement from NMSC.

To become a finalist, students must submit a detailed application of their accomplishments and successes, write an essay and be recommended by a high school official. Finalists will be notified in February if they are selected.

Ohio has 684 semifinalists, which is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors, NMSC stated.

“These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring,” NMSC stated.

Three types of scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2021. Finalists will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships, about 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by 220 corporations and business organizations, and about 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.
