Ohio lawmakers voted this week to designate October as Hindu Heritage Month following a legislative push by Dayton-area state Sen. Niraj Antani, R-Miami Twp.

The provision, which originated in a proposal by Antani in March 2023, was unanimously amended into Ohio House Bill 173 — a bill designating May as Older Ohioans Month — late Wednesday night and subsequently passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

With it, every October will be dedicated to recognizing “the contributions of Hindu Americans to the culture, education, faith, and life of the state.”

“This is a huge win for Hindus across Ohio and the country,” said Antani, Ohio’s first Hindu and Indian American state senator, in a press release.

The amendment was also championed in the House by Warren County Rep. Adam Mathews, R-Lebanon, who said he was grateful to work with Antani and his Hindu constituents to get the job done.

Both lawmakers had the support of the Hindu American Foundation, whose Managing Director Samir Kalra commended the bill in a press release.

“HB 173 goes a long way in ensuring that the contributions, culture and traditions of Hindu Americans are better understood and appreciated by the people of Ohio,” Kalra said.
