Teachers from eligible schools that serve children living in poverty are invited to shop for what they need in the retail-style free store in the Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley building.
“These women have supplied us with quite a few beautiful hats, some mittens and chair-back organizers made from material that we have in our warehouse,” explains Debra Seger, retail program manager for Crayons to Classrooms.
“We are trying to procure donations but cannot keep up with their busy hands.”
Hema Balwally, who is heading the project, says it has been fulfilling to observe the teachers as they select items for their students.
“We are retired and wanted to do something for the community,” Balwally explains.
Balwally says the items they most need include:
• Yarn (both full and partial skeins)
• Fleece
• Fabric (they would like to begin sewing smocks to be worn during art class)
• Thread
If you have these types of items you can take them to Crayons to Classrooms, 1511 Kuntz Road, Dayton. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Please call ahead to let staff members know when you want to drop off donations. Call (937) 528-6403.
• Dayton mom Dayatra Towles runs a new group called Modern Day Cinderella Inc., which collects dressy dresses for needy girls.
Each girl is given a complete prom ensemble including a dress, shoes, accessories and make-up. In April, an annual Cinderella Boutique is held during which the girls make their selections.
Drop-off barrels for the organization are located at Trotwood High School (4440 N. Union Road, Trotwood) and Wayne High School (5400 Chambersburg Road, Huber Heights.)
