Ariella Perlman to be featured artisan at DAI

DAYTON — Ariella Perlman, daughter of violin virtuoso Yitzhak Perlman, will be the guest jewelry artist at the final day of the Dayton Art Institute’s Holiday Happening Event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

The free day will also include free family portraits, inspired by Pier Francesco Bissolo’s “The Holy Family with a Donor in a Landscape.”

Perlman, who has been making jewelry for the past six years, moved to Oakwood three months ago with her husband, Robert Johnson, who plays French horn with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Her jewelry line is called Magpie Honey and includes both decoupage and beaded pieces including brooches, necklaces and holiday items. Prices range from $15 to $250.

“Magpies are birds that love things that sparkle, they put tinsel in their nests,” Perlman explains. “In my beaded work I use a lot of Swarovski crystals. And my decoupage work uses vintage items from children’s books.” As a child, she says, when she wasn’t practicing the flute, she always had colored markers and paper with her.

“I learned a lot of my techniques as a little girl going to arts and crafts camps,” says Perlman, who grew up in New York City. “In college I used what I’d learned and taught myself the rest.”

Store hours at the DAI’s Museum Store will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Vessel Amber jewelry trunk show is also part of the day.
