To receive the award, the center had to receive “outstanding clinical outcomes for 24 consecutive months, including patient satisfaction rates higher than 92 percent and a healing rate of 91 percent in less than 31 median days,” according to a news release.
Wound care is the management of chronic and acute wounds, said Dr. Eric Anderson, a podiatrist with Mercy Health. That could include diabetic, traumatic or post-surgical wounds, as well as burns.
“There are different wounds that require different types of treatment and it can be as simple as a basic cleaning of the wound,” he said.
The Urbana center provides a variety of treatments, including hyperbaric chamber therapy, Anderson said, and works with the Mercy Health-Urbana Hospital and Springfield Regional Medical Center.

“So, if there is something that needs to be done surgically, we can take it to the hospital and perform it there,” he said. “Then we bring it back to the wound center for post-operative care.”
Anderson sees roughly 15 to 20 patients a day and believes the reason why the care center won the award for the second year in a row is because of the staff there.
“We’ve got some very, very good surgeons and good hospitalists. We all work together,” he said. “The group of people that we have working there are very qualified … You don’t have to go to a big city to have high level care.”
