It’s National Salvation Army Week and businesses throughout Springfield are offering specials benefiting the charity.

Over 10 businesses across the area are offering specials, or exclusive limited-time offers, with proceeds benefiting the Salvation Army of Springfield.

“We are excited about this because it gives us a chance to kind of reflect on where we have been, where we are and where we are headed,” said Ryan Ray, development director with the Salvation Army of Springfield.

“This week allows us to be recognized for what we do in the community, but for us it’s bigger than that,” Ray said. “It’s a chance to recognize those who are willing to lock arms with us on a daily basis.”

National Salvation Army Week recognizes all the good that comes when volunteers and donors come together to benefit those in need, according to the Salvation Army’s website. National Salvation Army Week is a celebration that has spanned more than six decades.

This year’s theme for the week is, ‘Love has an army,’ Ray said.

“That’s just a statement to everyone that is involved in this thing, whether you volunteer or support us financially, you are very much part of this movement,” Ray said.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 43.1 million Americans live in poverty and millions more live near the poverty line. Approximately half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and one-third of adults between 18 and 64 live in low-income households.
