The new Veterans Administration clinic in Springfield will open towards the end of February as construction is slated to wrap up soon.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and a tour of the new facility will start at 11 a.m., Feb. 12. The clinic is expected to start serving patients about a week after the ceremony, said Ted Froats, the public affairs officer for the Dayton VA Medical Center.

The ribbon cutting was originally planned for Feb. 4, however it was moved to allow clinic staff time to set up equipment in the new facility.

The clinic, described as a “multi-million” project will be located at 1620 N. Limestone St. Once open, it will offer outpatient primary care, home-based primary care, optometry, outpatient mental health, podiatry, laboratory, physical therapy, social work and audiology.

Construction for the project began last year after the Dayton VA Medical Center announced previously that it was looking to expand its Springfield VA outpatient Clinic, which is currently located on Burnett Road.

However, the VA decided to build a new facility instead. The clinic on Burnett Road first opened its doors in April of 1999 and will continue to serve patients until the new clinic opens.

“There will be no break in care,” Froats said.

The new clinic will be 12,500 square feet, a 10 percent increase in size from the Burnett Road location, the News-Sun reported. It will also offer veterans a shorter walk from the waiting room to exam rooms, according to representatives of the Dayton VA Medical Center.

The Springfield VA will also feature more staff, with plans to start the hiring process once construction is completed, the News-Sun reported last year.

Froats said this project is unique because the VA decided to build the clinic from the ground up instead of using a preexisting structure.

He said they are going to follow a model used by a VA facility in Richmond, Indiana that allows veterans to stay in the same room, with care being brought to them.
