Mad River Farm Market adds $150K bar area

A Champaign County grocery store has added a new $150,000 bar area.

Mad River Farm Market, 7538 U.S. Highway 68 in West Liberty, added seating for 110 people this fall.

Owner Michele Hess opened a grocery store at the location in 2009, selling meats, cheeses, antiques and crafts.

In 2011, the market got its liquor license and added a drive-through window to the store.

“We are kind of a unique business,” Hess said. “It’s kind of a primitive, old fashioned-type place. It is a very comfortable atmosphere.”

The business started to serve food and hold wine and beer tastings, but business continued to grow.

Hess said when she started the grocery store six years ago, she never envisioned what it would become.

“We let the public dictate to us what they want and we are able to adjust to what the need is,” she said.

The bar area features a five TVs, bar and table seating as well as an area for private parties.

It was previously used as a flower shed with a few tables and chairs that held wine tasting and had bands on the weekends.

“It has just escalated from there. We decided it was time to add on,” Hess said.

Mad River Farm Market holds a ladies night every Tuesday and has monthly wine and beer tastings.
