WSU beats NKU, moves into sole possession of first place

Senior guard Grant Benzinger carried Wright State into sole possession of first place in the Horizon League with a season-high 31 points Thursday night in a 84-81 victory at Northern Kentucky.

Benzinger, who finished one point shy of his career high, scored 10 points in a key three-minute stretch late in the second half that saw WSU go from six points down to seven ahead against the defending league champions.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Raiders, who improved to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in the league. It also was their fourth consecutive road win, tying their longest streak since 2008.

NKU (11-6, 4-1) lost for the first time in eight home games this season.

Loudon Love, the reigning HL Freshman of the Week, added his third consecutive double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Everett Winchester added 10 points and six rebounds.

Junior center Drew McDonald and senior guard Lavone Holland II led NKU with 16 points apiece.

Wright State returns to the Nutter Center for a 4 p.m. game against Youngstown State on Monday.
