Springfielders spent the last week of February recovering from flooding that deluged the city in the early morning hours of February 26, 1929.

The waters of Buck Creek rose swiftly after midnight, causing over a million dollars in damage, trapping a number of people in their homes, and leaving many homeless.

THEN AND NOW: First Presbyterian Church

Relief efforts moved quickly as stations were set up for homeless at Memorial Hall and boats were sent for families stuck on Columbus Avenue, Warder, and Sherman, and along Lagonda Avenue.

Luckily, in much of the city, the flood water receded fairly quickly, leaving muck and debris, like that shown here looking west on E. Main Street.

Today the scene looks much different and hasn't flooded in some time.
