The humid heat of summer has finally been replaced by the more temperate weather of early fall.

That last week of unseasonably hot weather will help summer lovers to embrace this week’s cool down. I know I’m ready for cooler weather.

Those of us who just couldn’t make ourselves work out in the heat now have no excuse to avoid those lovely autumn walks or runs that are healthy for both our hearts and minds.

Last weekend the weather was absolutely perfect for the Heritage of Flight 5K in New Carlisle.

New Carlisle resident Aaron Fraley led the field of 72 runners finishing the 5K with a time of 17:38.6. Isaac Leavitt came in second with a 19:27.8 followed by Ron Argabright of Huber Heights and Rudolfo Castellanos on New Carlisle.

Lacey Cobb of New Carlisle was the first woman finisher with a time of 25:57.0. Second was Michelle Swafford of Medway followed by Chloe Sumner of Springfield and Bethany Leavitt of New Carlisle with identical times, according to the Speedyfeet website.

Looking forward a bit, registration is still open for the Enon Apple Butter 5K, which will be held Sunday, Oct. 15, at 9 a.m. Register online at Speedyfeet.com. Runners will need to sign up soon if they want a T-shirt, especially one of the popular long sleeved ones. It is possible to register at the last minute before the race but there’s no promise that there will be any shirts left.

This is the 19th year for this unique event that includes a run around Enon’s Adena Indian Mound. Gotta love that.

There is also a free Fun Run for kids under the age of 6.

Organizers expect at least 300 runners/walkers.

This run benefits the Special Wish Foundation and the Greenon Cross Country Team.

Anita Adduccio is one of those who started this event 19 years ago and is pleased that proceeds from the run have helped community members.

“Several people who had childhood cancer have taken part in this run every year since it began,” she said.

The 5k run/walk will be followed by a Health Fair presented by Western Medicine Inc. that, according to Adduccio, will include massages by Tuttle Rehab, refreshments and door prizes. Please note that you must be present to win.

Last weekend’s Heritage of Flight Festival had an amazing turn out with what I think might be record-setting attendance for almost every event. The Friday evening cruise-in was huge. The community owes a huge thank you to all the volunteers who put this on every year. Great job, everyone!

The Enon Apple Butter Festival is only 10 days away but it’s not too late to volunteer to also help make this event a major success. Additional volunteer help is always needed. Email the festival chair at enoncommunity@yahoo.com.

As we have learned in the past, volunteers make the festival world go round. If you love these festivals, do your part to keep them going.
