A $1.5 million pool will soon open at Indian Lake State Park, making it one of the few campgrounds in Ohio with a pool.

The state park has about 500 campgrounds and is nearly full every weekend, Indian Lake State Park Manager George Sholtis said. The pool is expected to attract even more visitors, he said.

“I believe the word will get out and it will draw more people,” he said. “We’re pretty confident of that.”

Construction on the pool next to the camp commissary began this winter and is expected to open at the end of the month with a dedication on June 28, Sholtis said.

Visitors have been curious about the construction, he said, and excited about the opening.

“We’ve had a lot of positive comments and questions about when it’s going to open,” he said.

One camper, Brittany Garman, has been coming to Indian Lake State Park with her family each summer for several years. She was surprised to see the new construction.

“When I came here I didn’t even know about it and when I saw it I thought it was amazing,” Garman said.

Indian Lake is one of her favorite vacation spots, she said.

“It’s just very relaxing,” she said. “We take bike rides, we walk and the little one likes to come swimming every day.”

She’s excited for it to be open when she visits next year.

“It’ll be a little easier on the beach because a lot of people come here,” she said.

The money for the project was approved by the state legislature, Sholtis said, and came out of the capital funding budget. Other state parks were also awarded money.

“They saw a need to do a lot of repairs and renovations but also some upgrades to facilities,” he said.

The pool will also attract people who might not like lake swimming.

“There are folks that prefer natural lakes and beaches and people who prefer pools,” Sholtis said. “And at Indian Lake we’ll have both.”

The park also has made other recent improvements, he said, including a new shower house and 30 campsites with sewer, water and electric hookups.

Indian Lake State Park also offers boating, skiing, hunting areas and other activities.

It’s been busy each of the five seasons Sholtis has worked at Indian Lake and he expects it to continue.

“It’s important to keep things well maintained, clean and safe especially,” he said.
