Food truck wins Springfield competition with jumbo shrimp dish

Nine new food trucks and 25 returning food trucks competed at the Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition on Saturday.

But, only one champion was crowned.

Greek Street Food Truck, from Miamisburg, was selected as the $10,000 grand prize winner.

“It’s amazing (to win),” said Chris Spirtos, owner of Greek Street Food Truck. “This is why everybody comes here, to take home the top prize. This is hands-down the best competition we go to, and I’ll definitely be back to try again.”

Local celebrity judges tasted Greek Street Food Truck’s signature dishes and scored each dish based on several categories. They won with their Seasoned Jumbo Shrimp dish.

The judges included Doug McGregor (chef and owner of Seasons Bistro and Grille), Micah Berner (owner of Cecil On Lime), Chris Oravec (sous chef of Mela), Clayton Horrighs (chef and owner of Speakeasy Raman), and Lisa Freeman (chef and owner of Le Torte Dolci).

Three other food trucks won cash prizes.

Tortilla Street Food, from Columbus, won the $5,000 runner-up prize with their Adobo Chicken Tamales.

Creole 2 Geaux, from Columbus, won the $2,000 third place prize with their Alligator Tacos.

For the second consecutive year, Fat Racks Smoking Co., from South Vienna, won the $1,000 People’s Choice Award. Attendees voted for the People’s Choice Award through the event’s mobile app.

“This competition blows the others out of the water,” said Bryan Krugh from Fat Racks Smoking Co. “It’s a great event to be a part of and to have the people choose us again to be their favorite just tops it off. It’s an awesome feeling.”

Eddie Bell, Rotary member and Food Truck Competition marketing committee chair, said the committee had no idea the competition would blow up like it has.

This is the sixth year for the competition and each year it continues to grow.

“We are so thankful that the Springfield community has responded so well to this event year after year,” said Bell. “We’re able to provide local charities and organizations with significant support to help support their amazing efforts.”

Planning for the 2020 Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition is currently underway.
