First winter storm of season downs trees, power lines in Clark County

The first winter storm of the season moved through the region Thursday bringing a wintry mix of snow, ice and rain and knocking out power to hundreds in the area.

The morning commute was slowed by ice-covered roads. Schools in Clark and Champaign counties opened late or closed for the day.

There were reports of downed trees and Ohio Edison’s website showed about 2,000 outages at the peak of the storm. By late Thursday that number was down to less than 100.

WEATHER: Snow tracked for evening commute; refreeze possible later tonight

Officials closed a road in German Twp. after a resident reported losing power after hearing an explosion, said German Twp. Police Chief Michael Stitzel.

“A woman called in and said she heard a loud explosion and she’d lost power, but when we got here we see that house is probably the only one without power, and all the other lines are still hot but laying down low to the ground,” Stitzel said.

Springfield Police also shut down South Belmont Avenue late Thursday because of downed power lines.

A mix of snow fell through most of the day and was forecast to continue into the evening.

“Snow accumulations expected between half an inch to 1 inch are possible, but this forecast has been changing quickly, so isolated higher amounts are possible,” Storm Center 7 Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs said.

Freezing rain isn’t expected to be in the forecast through the weekend, according to Vrydaghs.

Temperatures should range from 29 to 43 degrees with chance of a passing flurry Friday, she said. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mostly dry.
