Delta flight returns to Dayton after ‘airplane emergency’

UPDATE @ 11:16 a.m.

Delta officials told this news outlet that the passengers departing at 11:30 would fly in an alternate aircraft to resume the flight. The flight is still scheduled to depart at 11:30 a.m.

Maintenance technicians continue to evaluate why the engine of the plane overheated, but have yet to determine a cause. Delta officials said they had not heard of the tail end of the plane dropping during flight.

Out of the 123 original passengers, about 70 of those customers boarded the alternate flight for Atlanta at 11:30 a.m.

UPDATE @7:28 a.m.

A Delta Air Lines spokesperson said Flight 2392 returned to Dayton shortly after takeoff “when there was an indication the engine was getting too warm.”

The plane, which was carrying 123 passengers, landed safely. Another airplane has been sent to Dayton International Airport. The flight is now scheduled to take off at 11:30 a.m. and arrive in Atlanta at 1:05 p.m.

Delta apologized for customers’ delay.

UPDATE @ 7:25 a.m.

A Brookville man on a Delta flight to Atlanta that made an emergency landing in Dayton said he heard a loud bang only moments into the flight.

Shawn Hemmerich said only 30 seconds into the Delta flight he heard a loud bang towards the rear of the plane followed by some moments of panic amongst the passengers.

“The tail end of the plane kind of dropped down pretty suddenly,” he said. “Some people started screaming.”

After flying low to the ground, Hemmerich said the pilot came over the intercom saying the plane suffered a malfunction and they needed to make an emergency landing in Columbus. It was not specified why the plane landed in Dayton rather than continuing towards Columbus.

Hemmerich said he didn’t see any flames and didn’t smell smoke in the cabin.

The passengers have been taken off the plane and are now back at the gate where they started, according to Hemmerich.

He said there were no apparent injuries, but several passengers were shaken up.
