The Clark County commissioners have approved a $509,000 bid to rebuild Old Columbus Road Bridge in Springfield Twp.

The bid was awarded to Brumbaugh Construction, Inc., of Arcanum, Ohio, for a project that is expected to begin in spring next year and is scheduled to be completed in mid-June. The bridge will be closed during construction, said Clark County Engineer John Burr.

The truss bridge is located on Old Columbus Road between Bird and Grant roads, Burr said. The project is necessary because the bridge is decades old and was not designed to handle loads now carried by heavy trucks, he said.

“It does carry legal loads right now but we try to get them replaced before they have to get a load reduction on them,” Burr said.

He estimated there are about 240 structures considered bridges by the state in Clark County, and the engineer’s office tries to replace two or three large projects per year if possible. Staff in the engineer’s office also typically makes repairs on several smaller bridges each year.

“It’s a whole new bridge,” Burr said of the Old Columbus Road project. “It’s not a repair, it’s a replacement.”
