Background/overview
Food rationing became common in World War II, and during those years the Westside Market in Urbana was the only place in the vicinity that meat was sold. Decades after the War, the Market went through numerous ownerships, but its name remained the same until its final closing.
In 2008, Urbana natives Jim and Shirley Freyhof recognized they should buy the store that stood vacant for several years, and do something with it. They opened in March 2010 as a new grocery store, but were surprised when month after month the groceries weren’t selling. They decided to redesign the space to add tables and a large menu of fresh food to incorporate the shop into a grocery/carryout/food mart, with lottery/keno purchasing stations.
Jim got the lovable nickname “Pappy” from one of their five grandchildren, so Shirley felt their new mart would feel good known as Pappy’s Urbana. To top it off, Jim always wears either an Ohio State University cap or Cincinnati Bengals cap, so “Pappy” in his cap became the company logo.
Their son, Justin Freyhof, and daughter, Melissa Ross, manage this family business. Pappy’s Urbana is open everyday to sell freshly made appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and pizza alongside cold beer, wine, lottery and Keno!
