New vineyard and winery in Urbana to open next week

Dragonfly Vineyard & Wine Cellar will hold its grand opening on Saturday, June 1 in Urbana.

Located at 710 W. Herr Rd. in Urbana, the winery will offer its own blends of wines. Customers will also be able to purchase bottles of wine to take home.

“We have a great spectrum of wines, from dry all the way down to sweet, semi-sweet,” said owner, Connie Eichenauer. “People will be able to sit within the vines, in the vineyard right next to the grapes they are drinking.”

Eichenauer and her husband, Kent, purchased one acre of land in Urbana about nine years ago for a hobby.

“We were getting ready to retire and I was just thinking about gardening,” Eichenauer said. “And ever since then we have just kept expanding.”

Eichenauer said she and her husband have been experimenting with the wine making process since then, holding wine parties and allowing friends to try their homemade wine.

Now sitting on four acres of land, and after pressure from friends to begin selling their wine, Eichenauer said Dragonfly Vineyard & Wine Cellar was born.

“This wasn’t really the plan for us,” Eichanauer said. “But we just kept growing and doing more and more.”

The grand opening celebration will take place from noon to 9 p.m.

“We have such a great selection, I think people will have a hard time deciding what they want to drink,” Eichanauer said. “It will be a tough decision!”
